If you are a fiction author who would like to get your stories published in a journal or you would like to find a publishing house, then first you might need to find a literary agent that has the connections to make these things happen. When you look in your online directory and on the Internet, you can find many literary agents who have backgrounds in editing fiction. By asking them the following questions, you should be able to determine which ones are right for you. First, ask them how long they have been in business. Those with several years of experience should be familiar with genres like children’s books, science fiction, political satire, historical fiction, adventure, tragedy, comedy, fantasy, horror, television scripts, screenplays, poetry, romance, and mystery. Ask the literary agents if they have any clients who write the same kind of stories as you. Get a list of references so that you can talk directly to them so that you can determine what kind of experience the published authors had working with the agent. Ask them if they have connections with vanity presses that charge a small fee for editing, proofreading, publishing, and marketing promotion, as well publishers that can give you a subsidy for your work, especially if you are a new writer. When you find a writer’s agent that seems to suit your needs, be sure to write down his or her contact info so that you can contact them easily in the future if you decide to use their services.
